Suspects held without bail on gun charges

NEWBURYPORT — Two men charged with illegal possession of firearms were ordered held without bail pending dangerousness hearings yesterday in Newburyport District Court.

Paul Lopez, 21, of 36 Orchard St., Lawrence, and Elvin Gomez, 18, of 100 Foster St., Lawrence, will have hearings on May 13. Both were charged Saturday morning with possession of marijuana, two counts of unlawful possession of ammunition, two counts of failing to possess firearm identification cards and two counts of possessing large capacity ammunition feeding devices.

Gomez was also charged with a large capacity weapons storage violation, and Lopez was also charged with two counts of possession of an unlicensed firearm, two counts of keeping a loaded firearm in a car, two counts of carrying a dangerous weapon, two large capacity weapons storage violations, giving a false name to police, driving without a license, reckless driving, following too closely, speeding, an equipment violation and a marked lanes violation.

Police pulled Lopez over for speeding and tailgating, according to reports, and discovered a 9 mm pistol after Gomez attempted to hide it under a seat. Police found another 9 mm pistol in a locked compartment in the car. Both pistols were loaded and had larger shot capacities than allowed under state law. After a K-9 search, police also found marijuana in the car, according to court records.
