Worship Series May 15

The last talk in the "Understanding Others' Worship" series will be held on Thursday, May 15, from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Newburyport Public Library. Geshe Gendun Dyatso, Spiritual Director of the Healing Dharma Center, West Newbury, will speak on Buddhism. The talk is free, and all are welcome.

Antique Appraisals May 17

Antique Appraisal Day by Skinner Saturday, May 17, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at St. Paul's Church, 166 High St., Newburyport. All items will be evaluated by expert appraisers. The cost is $10 per item or $25 for three items.

Women of the Moose Breakfast May 18

The Women of the Moose are hosting a breakfast on Sunday, May 18, from 8 to 11 a.m., at the Horton Terrace Community Building. Tickets are $6 per person and the breakfast will include scrambled eggs, pancakes, French toast, bacon, sausage, home fries, coffee, tea and juice.

Salvation Army's May Life Lesson May 29

The Salvation Army will host a lecture about keeping your pets safe on Thursday, May 29. Appointments can be made from 4:30 to 6:20 p.m. and will last 10 minutes. Everyone who signs up for an appointment will also receive a free bag of groceries. Call Donna at 978-462-3271 for appointments.

Trips open to seniors, others

The Friends of the Amesbury Council on Aging and Newburyport Golden Agers are sponsoring the following trips. They are open to anyone. You don't have to be a senior to go. Emergency Management opening membership

The Office of Emergency Management seeks volunteers for a variety of support services while promoting disaster preparedness, including response programs and activities in Newburyport and area towns. Activities include public education, disaster exercises, Emergency Operations Center (EOC). Volunteers are a vital resource to emergency or disaster response teams. Merrimack RiverFeline Rescue Society seeking volunteers

The MRFRS is currently seeking volunteers for their "Strut for Strays" fundraiser on Sunday, June 8, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Bartlet Mall in Newburyport. The event will feature Randy Price at the honorary chairman, music by Sunchunk and refreshments. Proceeds will support MRFRS's programs caring for cats and kittens in need of aid locally.

Newburyport Choral Society scholarship available

The Newburyport Choral Society is offering a $1,000 scholarship, The Betty Gillette Newburyport Choral Society Scholarship, in honor of charter member Betty Gillette, lifelong teacher and student of music. Parks Commission seeks new members

The Newburyport Parks Commission seeks to fill two vacancies left by resigning members. Commissioners are responsible for oversight and management of city parks, parks budget, formulating strategies for parks maintenance, and capital improvements and community event coordination. Appointed by the mayor's office, they serve five years. Previous experience not needed, but interest in parks and recreation is recommended. Summer Sailing Classes for Children

The American Yacht Club will be hosting the Newburyport Summer Sailing Program for children age 10 to 18. Instruction is for beginner to advanced levels and for children ages 10 to 18. Summer Sailing Classes for Adults

YWCA preschool classes

YWCA offering preschool classes at the PITA Hall on Plum Island now to June 23. Classes include Indoor Soccer I and II, and Kids in Motion, for 3- to 4-year-olds who want to jump, boogie and move. Camp opportunities for ages 3 to entering fourth grade; full day child care. Register in person at 10 State St. until the end of April and, beginning May 5, at the YWCA on Market Street.

Newburyport host families needed

Worldwide International Student Exchange, a nonprofit educational program, seeks host families for Spanish students, ages 14 to 17, for a period of four weeks. Students can share a room with your child of the same gender. Students have a structured program each day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with English classes and cultural trips, and come with their own spending money. They want to experience an American family. Volunteers needed at refuge store

The Friends of Parker River National Wildlife Refuge need of volunteers to help staff The Plover's Nest gift shop and bookstore at the Refuge Headquarters and Visitor Center, 6 Plum Island Turnpike. The store will be open Saturdays and Sundays, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteers will be needed to help customers and act as cashiers during those times. Training will be provided. The Friends of Parker River National Wildlife Refuge Inc. is an independent, 501 C3, nonprofit organization dedicated to the stewardship of the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge.

The YWCA Greater Newburyport has it all! Register now for summer camps, summer School's Out (full-day program) and Health and Wellness at the new facility. Benefit Fundraiser for Pauline Carlo May 23

Michael's Harborside will host a fundraiser on Friday, May 23, from 6 to 9 p.m. to benefit Pauline (Yelinek) Carlo, her husband, Joe, and their three daughters, Jacquelyn, Emma and Julia. Last year, Pauline, formerly of Byfield and Newburyport, was diagnosed with a form of colon cancer and underwent extensive radiation, chemotherapy and surgery. The treatments appeared to work, but it was recently discovered that her cancer has returned.

Pauline must now pursue aggressive surgical therapy as she has exhausted her body's tolerance for radiation and chemotherapy. Similarly, her family has exhausted their savings and equity while paying for travel and medical expenses associated with her illness.

Help support Pauline and her family by attending the fundraiser at Michael's Harborside, which will include hors d'ouevres, a silent auction and the acoustic sounds of Sargent John. A cover charge of $20 will be accepted, and additional donations are welcomed. MRFRS Lecture Series June 24

The Merrimack River Feline Rescue Society presents "What Are They Thinking," a lecture by behavior consultant Monique Chretien on Tuesday, June 24, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the Newburyport Public Library. The lecture will examine why animals behave the way they do and behaviorist methods to correct behavior.

Scholarships available

DeValera Daughters of Isabella (female counterpart of the Knights of Columbus) will again offer two $500 scholarships to graduating Catholic seniors who will be continuing their education at a school of higher education. Refuge seeks recruits for conservation corps

Parker River National Wildlife Refuge seeks recruits for its Youth Conservation Corps. Four positions available: two for boys, two for girls, who will work 40 hours per week for approximately eight weeks and earn the current minimum wage ($8/hour). Tentative dates are June 23 to Aug. 15. Candidates must commit to the full eight-week program, be 15 but have not reached 19 years during the time of employment, be a U.S. resident, have a Social Security number, and have a desire and ability to work outdoors. Applications are at Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, 6 Plum Island Turnpike, Newburyport, MA 01950, located off Rolfe's Lane, or at most local high school guidance departments. Office hours at the refuge are Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Call 978-465-5753. Applications must be received at the refuge no later than 4:30 p.m. on May 2. Selection by random drawing will be completed by May 9.

Ham and Bean suppers back at Masonic Hall

The Horton Terrace Tenant Council is having an annual Yard Sale Saturday, May 24, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Horton Terrace Community Building, Golden Drive, Newburyport. There will be a white elephant table and bake table. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., including hot dogs, chips, cookies and beverages. Tickets for the lunch are $4.
