Paddle Safety Day May 17
The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary will host "Paddle Safety Day" on Saturday, May 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Camp Denison, 84 Nelson St., Georgetown. The educational event will include discussions on life jackets, float plans, hypothermia, rescues and live in-water demonstrations.
Book Sale May 17
The Friends of the Georgetown Library will host their spring book sale on Saturday, May 17, from 9 a.m. to noon, with memberships available at the door. Donors may leave books for the sale at the library during regular hours. On Monday, May 19, from 2 to 3 p.m., all leftover books will be available in return for a donation of your choice. Proceeds will help Friends of the Georgetown Library fund children's programs.
Third annual Film Festival
Georgetown High School is hosting a third annual Film Festival on Wednesday, May 14, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Georgetown High School. Digital short films and artwork by the students will be featured along with a variety of projects from the art department.
License your dog
All 2007 dog licenses are now expired. There are still approximately 500 dogs that are not currently licensed. Mass General Law requires all dogs 6 months or older to be licensed. Avoid late fees and fines and license now.

Scholarship donations
The Georgetown Scholarship Committee was able to award several scholarships each year due to the generosity of townspeople. Lately, the town has experienced significant growth but donations have declined. The committee hopes this reminder will encourage donations to continue supporting educational aspirations of the townspeople. Checks made out to town of Georgetown Scholarship Fund can be brought to the tax collector's office. Applications for scholarships and instructions are at the town tax accountant's office.
Camp Leslie accepting registrations
Camp Leslie, located on West Main Street, is accepting registrations for day and overnight campers for the 2008 season. Open to all youths ages 7 to 14, the camp is American Camp Association accredited. The season will run for six weeks, from July 6 through Aug. 15. The extended day camp runs 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and allows campers to take part in all activities. For more information, call 978-352-8060 or visit www.campleslie.org.
Medical transportation for seniors
Through Northern Essex Elder Transport, the Georgetown Council on Aging provides rides for seniors to medical and other necessary appointments. Northern Essex Elder Transport is staffed by volunteer drivers. Though a donation of 40 cents per mile is requested to help support the program, no one will be turned away. A minimum of two days notice is required. The driver will call those with appointments on the day of travel to finalize details. For more information, call the COA at 978-352-5726.

Paper recycling fundraiser
Georgetown Middle-High School Key Club is running a paper recycling program as a continuing fundraiser. Any paper, except cardboard and phone books, can be recycled. Drop off paper in the containers at the end of the school's upper driveway after 4 p.m. on weekdays or any time on weekends.
Friends of the Library news
The Friends of the Georgetown Library have a selection of gently used books for sale during regular library hours. The collection is at the end of the corridor to the left of the circulation desk. Proceeds go toward museum passes and children's programming. Friends collect and recycle for cash ink jet and laser printer cartridges and cell phones, even if broken. Book donations are always welcome.
The Friends usually meet at the library the first Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. New members are welcome; membership applications are available at the circulation desk. Mary Paganelli is president.
Georgetown COA seeks alternate board member
The Georgetown Council on Aging seeks a volunteer to fill a vacancy as an alternate board member. Applications and a description of responsibilities are at the COA office in Town Hall. Doll-making group meets Mondays
Creating handcrafted dolls for sick children hospitalized in Massachusetts, a doll-making group meets Mondays at 9:30 a.m. at the First Congregational Church. Socialize and hand-sew basic clothes for hand-crafted dolls. Newcomers of all ages are welcome to join as their schedules permit. COA Friendly Visitor Program underway
As an extension of the Council on Aging's Outreach Program, the COA recently established a Friendly Visitor Program. Coordinated by the COA, Friendly Visitors provide homebound elders with one hour of companionship and socialization on a weekly basis. Building a network of support within the community, the Friendly Visitor program links elders to opportunities designed to enhance their well-being. To apply as a friendly visitor, call COA Director Colleen Ranshaw-Fiorello at 978-352-5726. Elders interested in participating in the Friendly Visitor Program may also call the COA office.
Rotary breakfasts

Summer Baseball Clinic dates, times change
The dates and times for the Georgetown Police Department Summer Baseball Clinic have been changed. The clinic was scheduled to run from Monday, July 7, to Friday, July 11, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Georgetown Peabody Library is offering spring children's programs. To sign up, call the library at 978-352-5728 or come into the Children's Room. Storytimes run for four weeks, beginning May 5 and ending May 27. Registration required except for the Bouncing Books and Babies Program and Pajama Time.

Michael J. Donohoe Memorial Scholarship Application
The Michael J. Donohoe Memorial Scholarship applications are currently available at the Georgetown High School guidance office or by contacting Rich Laflamme at laflam5000@comcast.net. Applications are available to high school graduates living in Georgetown and planning on attending a four-year college or university. Selection criteria includes school and community involvement, citizenship, grade point average, and submission and content of an application and essay. The application deadline is May 5.
'Victorian Lady' performs May 18
The Georgetown Historical Society will present "Victorian Lady" on May 18 at the Georgetown VFW, Route 133, at 2:30 pm. Doors open at 2 p.m. with a period display. Tickets for adults are $18 in advance, $20 day of event; seniors, $15; children 12 and under, $12. Tickets are available at Meader's General Store or Theo's Restaurant.
