NEWBURYPORT — A local man stuck a butcher knife in his ex-girlfriend's mouth and kidnapped her and their infant yesterday morning, according to police reports.

Rogerio DeSouza, 29, of 232 Low St., reportedly went to the apartment early yesterday morning and demanded to get back together with the woman, said Lt. Richard Siemasko. DeSouza reportedly punched her head and stomach and stuck the knife in her mouth before she agreed out of fear.

DeSouza then forced the woman to drive him to Striper's Grill and Inn, where he had been staying, so he could pick up his things, according to police reports. When she tried to jump out of the car, he locked the doors and forced her to stay inside. After they returned from Salisbury, the woman escaped to the White Hen on Storey Avenue and called police about 6:30 a.m.

DeSouza was arrested at the apartment and charged with kidnapping, domestic assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and driving without a license. Officers Kevin Martin, Dani Michalek and William Steeves made the arrest. DeSouza was arraigned yesterday in Newburyport District Court.
