ROWLEY — They came. They golfed. They got wet, very wet, but the rain never dampened their spirits. They were the 60 people who came together last week to golf at the fourth annual Golf for a Good Cause held at Carriage Pines Golf Club.

The event was hosted by the Rowley Public Education Fund, a nonprofit organization that provides educational enrichment opportunities to the students at the Pine Grove School. The event raised $10,000, a large portion of which will be used for enrichment programs for each grade level and one all-school event at the school.

"This was the first time we didn't have a bright, sunny day for this event," said Kate Scalley, president of the RPEF. "But it did not matter at all to this group — they spent nearly five hours golfing in the rain, all in the name of the children of Pine Grove. We are very fortunate to have such a dedicated group of caring individuals who support education at the school."

There to show their support of the school by playing 18 holes of golf was incoming Pine Grove Principal Christine Kneeland and her family, Rowley Selectman Dick Cummings and Larry Hunter and Mary Anne Clancy from the Institution for Savings, along with dozens of parents of Pine Grove students and many volunteer helpers.

The rain subsided after the game so the players could enjoy a barbecue luncheon. Dozens of raffle prizes were given away, including gift cards to local restaurants, spas and stores. Auction items included Red Sox tickets and an outdoor rocking chair.

Fifteen hole sponsors contributed to the success of the event, as well as more than 20 local businesses that donated raffle prizes.

The RPEF's mission is to generate financial resources through donations, grants and fundraising events to support, expand and enrich the academic experience of Rowley's Pine Grove Elementary School children by supplementing core curriculum in the areas of art, music, math and science with a focus on improving literacy levels for all grades.
