Georgetown farmers market cropping up in town on July 11
GEORGETOWN — A farmers market is coming to town next month, bringing fresh produce, baked goods and crafts to the Park and Ride parking lot. It will start July 11 and run every Saturday until Sept. 26 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
"The planning is going well so far," said farmers market organizer Jim Lacey. "We have five definite vendors so far with food, and expect at least three crafters."
Lacey said that Georgetown nonprofit groups are welcome to set up booths selling hot dogs, popcorn, sodas or other food items to benefit their groups.
The farmers market is intended to bring people downtown to see local businesses and encourage buying from local farmers. "We want to be part of the 'buy local' movement," Lacey said.
Vendors pay $10 for a 10-by-10-foot area for the four hours of the fair each week and can have a space for as few or many weeks as they would like. "We are being very flexible since this is the first year we're doing this," Lacey said.
There is still space for anyone hoping to sell goods at the market. "You do not need to live in Georgetown to have a spot at the market," Lacey said. Ideas for products to sell include flowers and herbs, eggs, meat, ice cream and crafts, in addition to the usual fare of fruits and vegetables.
Lacey said the farmers market committee is looking into having coupons to use at local businesses to help increase foot traffic downtown.
