The Student Council recently sponsored a project to send letters and care packages to members of the military serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Salisbury Elementary School sent 10 packages to an Army unit in Afghanistan and a Marine unit in Iraq.
Totaling 100 pounds, the packages included personal hygiene items, socks and T-shirts, lots of candy and snacks, items for kids, towels, laundry detergent and DVDs.
In addition, many children wrote letters to the men and women serving their country on faraway shores.
The school thanks all who donated items to this cause and to the Student Council members for sorting and packing. The hope is to repeat this project in September and April during the coming school year and for as long as military men and women serve in harm's way.

On Friday night, June 19, put on a poker face and join the Salisbury Sea Dogs and the Salisbury PTA to raise money to benefit local youth at a Casino Night fundraiser. It will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. at La Chiquita Mexican Restaurant, 238 Lafayette Road, Salisbury.
The night includes Money Wheel, Roulette, Black Jack, Poker, Chuck-a-Luck and much more. Advance tickets are $10, $15 at the door.

This past week, the fifth-grade students had a wonderful time taking a train ride and exploring Boston's famed Freedom Trail. Students were able to have tours of the Old Statehouse, as well as King's Chapel. The students also explored The Granary Burying Ground and saw many individuals dressed in character.
Finally, they were able to eat out on the Boston Common and observe many of the interesting people of Boston and all the Common has to offer.

The fourth grade recently enjoyed "Winged Memories," a slide presentation by Bruce Bateman, a program sponsored by Salisbury's PTA.
Bateman talked about his flying experiences, along with nostalgic stories and reminiscences of other North Shore aviators and airports of yesteryear. He also shared some of his military and civilian aviation memorabilia with the students.

In Sandy Foley's third-grade class, Priscilla Stanley and Cassidy Nguyen have completed the Otter Creek Rocket Math Program, having mastered all their basic math facts through division.
Wednesday, Foley's students presented their Revolutionary War PowerPoint presentations to their parents.

After studying all the elements that make up good nonfiction writing, Debbie Dennehy's second-grade class has written nonfiction books about animals of their choice. Their books were very complete, including tables of contents, pictures, diagrams, glossaries and even a page about the author.
Yesterday, students held an Author Celebration, inviting friends and family to hear students read their books.
"Students put a lot of effort and hard work into this project and learned a lot about animals," Dennehy said.
