Accident snarls traffic on Chain Bridge

By Katie Curley
Staff writer

AMESBURY — A four-car crash on Deer Island between the Hines and Chain bridges shut down the bridge and backed up traffic in Amesbury and Newburyport for nearly an hour yesterday afternoon.

Amesbury and Newburyport police responded to the scene shortly after 4 p.m. after a chain-reaction accident caused one car to be sandwiched between two others. Another car could be seen at rest horizontally on the bridge.

Because Deer Island is considered part of Amesbury, that town's police took the report while Newburyport officers directed traffic.

A white Mercedes-Benz SUV and a black sedan suffered the most damage. A Jeep and a second black sedan suffered only minor damage.

Traffic was diverted away from the bridge as police cleared the scene. One person was transported to Anna Jaques Hospital with injuries.

The accident remained under the investigation of Amesbury police, but no further details were available last night.
