Paddle and Walk event June 29

The Essex County Greenbelt will host a free monthly ramble "Paddle and Walk" led by Pike Messenger Sunday, June 29, 1 to 5 p.m., at Sawyer's Island. While paddling, walking and wading through the low tides you will be able to look for birds, mud creatures and plants.

Chicken barbecue June 25

The Rowley Grange will hold its annual Chicken Barbecue on Wednesday, June 25. The menu will include chicken, baked beans, potato salad, four-bean salad and strawberry shortcake. Reserve and save money by calling 978-948-7288 and leaving a message. Takeout is available.

Rowley Grange news

The Rowley Grange held its last meeting of the summer and will celebrate their 114th anniversary with dinner at the Hungry Traveler in Salisbury. To make reservations, contact 978-465-5508. Reservations must be made by Saturday, June 14.

Board of trustees needs members

Rowley's Public Library board of trustees seeks two additional members to fill one, three-year term vacancy and one, one-year vacancy. Responsibilities of the office are at www.rowleylibrary.org or call Library Director Pam Jacobson at 978-948-2850.

Friends of Rowley COA trips and events

The following are offered by the Friends of the Rowley Council on Aging. For more information, call Denise Gilman at 978-948-7637.

Note: The June 1 to 5 trip to "Finger Lakes & Lake George Adventure" in New York has been postponed and will be scheduled at a time to be announced.

Sept. 13 and 14 — "Big Apple & Cruise to Nowhere." Two days, one night, three meals (onboard ship), riding city tour of New York and tour to the top of Rockefeller Plaza.

Volunteer visitors: Have a little time to spend with area seniors living alone? Even one hour a week or month would be appreciated. No special skills required other than a friendly attitude.

Line dancing: Due to its popularity, line dancing classes for seniors will continue at the VFW. Beginners class every Thursday, 2 to 2:30 p.m., $4 each session. Call to sign up.

Adult yoga classes

The Rowley Public Library is offering hatha yoga classes Wednesdays at 5 p.m. for $10 per class, or $8 for members of Friends of the Rowley Public Library. Bring a mat and wear comfortable clothes. To register, call 978-948-2850.

Farmers Market starts July 13

The Rowley Agricultural Commission will host the annual Farmers Market beginning Sunday, July 13, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Rowley Common. The Farmers Market will last every Sunday throughout the summer, and the commission is looking for anyone wishing to sell farm produce or an abundance of backyard garden produce. There is no vendor fee. The Rowley Agricultural Commission is also in need of a school, church or civic fundraising group that would sell coffee, baked goods, doughnuts and drinks at the Farmers Market. If you would like to be a vendor or have questions, contact 978-948-7506.

Bingo volunteers needed

The Council on Aging seeks volunteers to call out numbers once a month for Tuesday bingo games held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. in the COA room at the Town Hall annex. Those interested should call 978-948-7637.

Annual Photography Contest

The Rowley Historical Society welcomes all amateur and professional photographers to enter the 2008 Annual Photography Contest. The contest begins in June and ends Sept. 30. This year's categories are children, animals and landscape depicting Rowley. Entry fee is $5; the entry fee is waived for children under 18-years-old and for historical photos. Rules include: Two photos of each entry, 5x7 and 8x10 only, no printing on front of photos, name, description and location on the back of photos, and no photographic enhancements. Mail entries to Historical Society, Main St., Rowley M.A. 01969.

Dog licenses

The 2008 dog licenses are now two months overdue and will cost $20 because of a $10 late fee. At the end of June, a $15 late fee will be added, making the licenses $25. Please notify the town clerk at 978-948-2081 if you no longer own a dog so you can be removed from the database.

All-Scout paper drive July 12

The All-Scout paper drives are held the second Saturday of odd months from 9 a.m. to noon, behind the First Congregational Church of Rowley, Main Street. If you have questions, call George Pacenka at 978-948-7918. Paper drives for the rest of the year are July 12, Sept 13 and Nov. 8.

Museum passes available

The Rowley Public Library has discounted admission passes to the Museum of Science and the New England Zoo (also discounted entry at Stone Zoo and the Franklin Park Zoo). Make a reservation by calling 978-948-2850 before stopping by to pick them up. Also, parking passes to all Massachusetts state parks.

'Rowley 1639' shirts

"Rowley 1639" short-sleeve T-shirts are on sale at the Old Town Bread Company, Main Street. Child sizes are in pink or navy, $12. Women's in pink and men's in navy or green, $15. Adult sized sweat shirts in navy, white or burnt orange, $32. Long-sleeved adult T-shirts in navy, white or pink, $20. Proceeds benefit students at Pine Grove School. Sale is sponsored by the Pine Grove PTO.

Shellfish and mooring permits

Shellfish and mooring permits have been processed and are currently available at Town Hall. Mooring and ramp permits are now available to those interested in obtaining one for the 2008 boating season. Ramp permits are for Rowley residents and cost $40 with proof of residency. Mooring permits are assigned by the Harbormaster. Mooring permits cost $2.50 per foot and are available at the town clerk's office.

Free smoke, carbon monoxide detectors for seniors

The Council on Aging still has some smoke and carbon monoxide detectors for Rowley seniors; must live in your own home. Detectors should be replaced every seven years with most advanced models. For more information, call 978-948-7637.
