Thursday is vehicle night on the common

The ever-popular vehicle night on Rowley Common, a summertime event sponsored by the Rowley Public Library, will take place on Thursday, July 16 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Various fire trucks, emergency vehicles and construction vehicles will be on hand for viewing, visiting and perusing by kids of all ages.

Also this week, and taking place at the library, is Stories from Outer Space, performed by Spanky's Puppets on Wednesday, July 15 from 11 a.m. to noon. All ages are invited to this performance to see what happens when colorful, mischief-making aliens travel to earth in their flying saucers. No registration is required for either of these events. The winner of the 8G iPod nano offered through the Fourth of July raffle was Andrea Holbrook of 866 Haverhill St. Holbrook was not in attendance at the town's Fourth of July event that took place on the Town Common, but was called immediately when her name was chosen as the winner. She was congratulated by Selectman Bob Snow and serenaded by the Dick Kaplan Band to the tune of "Stars and Stripes Forever."

It is expected that the money raised from the raffle, along with a matching amount of money donated by the town's new ambulance service Action Ambulance, will be used to purchase a defibrillator for the town of Rowley. Action Ambulance will help train the staff at the library, where the defibrillator will be kept, on the usage of this emergency medical equipment.

Theibra lry board of trustees for the Rowley Public Library recently completed its long-range plan covering fiscal years 2009-2013. The goals identified include improving Rowley's quality of life by acting as a hub for cultural events and providing opportunities for all; contributing to a vibrant town center by providing formal and informal social gathering space; and supplying resources to the community for informational and recreational needs. Copies of the plan are available at the library.

Hearing evaluations by hearing specialist Joe Sarofeen will be offered for the senior citizens in town at the Council on Aging on Wednesday from 1 to 4 p.m. Appointments may be set up by calling the council at 978-948-7637.
