Programs offered at Joppa Flats center

Mass Audubon's Joppa Flats Education Center at One Plum Island Turnpike in Newburyport is a natural history education and visitor center that is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday and Monday holidays, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call 978-462-9998 for information about additional programs and events, or visit www.massaudubon.org/joppaflats.

Shorebirding by Kayak: Observe summer's shorebirds around Woodbridge Island at the mouth of the Merrimack River. Sunday, July 20, 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Meet at the Joppa Flats Education Center. $60 for Mass Audubon members; $70 for nonmembers. Pre-registration is required. Introduction to Butterflying: Learn about identifying characteristics, life cycles, host plants and flight times of butterflies. Children age 8 and up welcome with an adult. Tuesday, July 22, 10 a.m. to noon. Meet at Joppa Flats Education Center. $5 for Mass Audubon members; $7 for nonmembers. No pre-registration.

Friday Evening Paddle for Beginners: Paddle around the Merrimack River Islands between Newburyport and Amesbury and enjoy summer sights and sounds. Friday, July 25, 5 to 8 p.m. Meet at Joppa Flats Education Center. $35 for Mass Audubon members; $45 for nonmembers. Pre-registration is required.

Isles of Shoals Adventure by Kayak: An all-day trip for experience kayakers. Shuttle out to the Isles of Shoals for a paddle to see wildlife. On-deck barbecue lunch included. Saturday, July 26, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. meet at the boat docks at the North end of Plum Island. $150 for Mass Audubon Members; $160 for nonmembers. Pre-registration is required.

Seabirds and Whales on the Prince: Board The Prince of Whales for a birding and whale-watching trip guided by marine mammal naturalists and Joppa Flats staff. Monday, July 28, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Meet on the boardwalk off Merrimack Street in downtown Newburyport. $47 for all. Pre-registration is required by calling Newburyport Whale Watch at 800-848-1111.
