NEWBURYPORT — Take a journey through the street markets of Agrabah by magic carpet ride tomorrow night as the first production of Newburyport Summer Stock debuts with Disney's "Aladdin."
Directed by Newburyport High School teacher Mike Pirollo with musical direction by Evelyn Mann, 17 talented local students will put on a performance showcasing their work this summer.
"This is the first show we have put on as summer stock," Pirollo said. "We have been meeting all day for three weeks and putting the show together from auditions to the final show."
"Aladdin," a Middle Eastern folk tale, has been adapted into several different stories over the years and has long been the subject of pantomime.
Pirollo directed the musical, "Back to the 80's," in the spring for the middle school students, before starting the camp.
"It's gone really well, and we have a real interesting, talented mix of kids grades six through nine," Pirollo said. "It's a nice blend, and it makes for a really interesting show."
The original tale was part of "The Book of One Thousand and One Nights" by French translator Antoine Galland, who wrote the story down after hearing it from an Arab storyteller in Syria.
Tomorrow night's show will present Disney's adaption of the classic story from their 1992-award winning animated feature film.
Tomorrow's and Friday's shows will be held at Newburyport High School auditorium and will run 45 minutes.
Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door.
