NEWBURYPORT — Students at the Immaculate Conception School have donated school supplies to Haitian children, who will soon have a new school to use them in, thanks to IC-Haiti, the church's all-volunteer nonprofit organization dedicated to helping the poor in Haiti.
Tomorrow, the group is hoping to raise a boatload more money by luring Yankee Homecoming tourists to a giant community yard sale at the church, at 42 Green St., from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., to help sustain the school in Haiti.
Thousands of items will be for sale, including books, clothing, shoes, jewelry, kids clothes and toys, holiday decor items, linens, sporting goods, bric-a-brac, small furniture and electronics.
In affiliation with the St. Boniface Haiti Foundation, IC-Haiti is building an elementary school in the village of ChaCha. The school, which is slated to be complete sometime next year, will be able to have about 200 children, who will receive education and a meal each day.
"Not only do we plan to fund the building of the school, but we plan to supply it with teachers and keep the school going," Rev. Paul Bérubé, senior priest in residence, said.
Money raised will fund teachers' salaries, which are currently $30 per month, or $1 each day, Bérubé said.
"We hope to raise their salaries so these people will get a break," Bérubé said.
