Class of '58 celebrates 50th anniversary

NEWBURYPORT — The Newburyport High School Class of 1958, with 116 classmates and guests attending, observed its 50th year reunion the weekend of Aug. 8 to 10. The celebration began with a social gathering at the Winner's Circle Friday, dinner and dancing Saturday at Ashworth by the Sea, followed by Sunday brunch at the Old Salt Restaurant. Former NHS basketball coaches Bob "Boots" Chouinard and Walter Sheridan and his wife, Connie, were invited guests, and many memories of the great sport teams in the 1950s were reflected upon.

Saturday evening, Frank Bell (NHS '56) served as MC, and Father Ray Richard, home from Honduras, led a silent prayer for the 28 deceased members of the class. He then gave the invocation before a deluxe buffet dinner was served.

A photo of all the classmates was taken and will be forwarded to those present as a souvenir of this special occasion. Poster boards of families and old school day photos and news clippings were on exhibit for reminiscing as well as entertainment.

Due to the generous monetary donations at the 45th reunion, it was announced the Class of 1958 awarded three $1,000 scholarships to three graduates of the Class of 2008 and also contributed $1,000 to RESTORE, the World War Memorial Stadium fundraiser.
