September 08, 2008 03:52 am The YWCA is offering Bicycling 101, a six-hour course designed for novice bicycle riders or advanced cyclists who do not feel confident in traffic. It will be taught by Pierre Avignon, a certified instructor from the League of American Bicyclists. The course consists of a two-hour presentation on Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 6 p.m. at the library, and an "on-bike" session on Saturday, Sept. 13 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. All proceeds from the course will go toward the purchase of bike racks at the YWCA. A helmet is required and participants must be at least 16 years old. Bicycles must be in good condition. The cost for the program is $60. Interested participants can register online at www.lmvb.org or by calling 978-510-1021 before Wednesday. Donations toward the bike racks can be made at the YWCA, 13 Market St., Newburyport. ¢¢¢ The Chamber of Commerce will present the Fall Fashion Showcase Friday. The public showcase will begin at 7 p.m. on the waterfront. All proceeds benefit Waterfront Park. For more information, visit www.newburyportchamber.org. ¢¢¢ The Ancient Order of Hibernians, Division 1, is seeking nominations for this year's Msgr. Thomas M. Lane Award for good citizenship. Nominations will be accepted until Sept. 15. The award was created in memory of the longtime pastor of Immaculate Conception Church. It is presented annually to a member of the greater Newburyport community in recognition of their community service and community goodwill. The winner will be given the award during a corned beef and cabbage dinner on Oct. 24 at the Elks hall. ¢¢¢ The Beacon Coalition will host a Mental Health Providers luncheon on Wednesday, Sept. 24. It will be held at the library from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the program room on the first floor. The lunch will serve as a chance to network, learn about prevention efforts, local statistics and community resources. The coalition has posted an online survey in two formats and is asking for all Newburyport adults to take some time to fill it out. The survey can be found at www.beaconcoalition.com and asks for input on Newburyport's youth and youth behavior. The survey will be available until Oct. 8.
