Marching Band raffling off quilt

The Pentucket Regional High School Marching Band is raffling off a handmade quilt to raise money for new uniforms. The queen-sized quilt, titled Autumnal Love, is made from 100 percent cotton fabrics — all from the Red Barn in Merrimac. It is machine-washable and dryable. Tickets, $1 each or six for $5, will be on sale at the remaining home football games, during parent-teacher conferences on Nov. 4 and 6, at the Thanksgiving Day football game, at the Merrimac Santa Parade and at the Pentucket Fine and Performing Arts Foundation's Friday Family Flick movie night Dec. 5. Pentucket Principal Jonathan Seymour has announced that Stephanie Cesario, Margaret Craig, Kacey Hill and Mark Pigott have been named as Commended Students in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, was presented to the students. About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2009 competition for the national Merit Scholarships, Commended Students placed among the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2009 competition by taking the 2007 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

Seventeen graduates from the Class of 2008 have earned AP Scholar awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the AP exams. The College Board's Advanced Placement Program provides motivated and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school and to earn college credit, advanced placement or both for successful performance on the AP exams. About 18 percent of the 1.6 million students worldwide who took AP exams performed at a sufficiently high level to also earn an AP Scholar Award. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on students' performance on AP exams. Seven students qualified for the National AP Scholar Award by earning an average of 4 or higher on a five-point scale on all AP Exams taken. These students are Christopher Fields, Laura Homan, Keenan Leonard-Solis, Matthew Murphey, Benjamin Radville, Nicholas Sawyer and Meagan Watson. Seven students qualified for the Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. These students are Tyler Brown, Michelle Favor, Juliette Nolan, Katherine Studzinski, Alexander Tarr and Colleen Treado. Four students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average of at least a grade of 3.5 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. They are Aalin Bellinger, Hillary, Jessica Kelly and Brian Pigott.
