NHS extends musical's run

NEWBURYPORT — The Newburyport High School theater department thought the performances of the musical comedy "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" the last two weekends were so successful that students decided to hold one extra performance tonight at 7 in the NHS auditorium.

"The students approached us about the extra performance. They were really excited about it," co-director Lisa Zaleski said. "They were getting great attendance, but they really felt they weren't done with it and wanted one more shot."

Stage manager Elise Wine said the current play is a way to raise money for the department's trip to Italy this spring, where they will study Greek and Italian theater and film. The trip costs the department $111,000 for the 47 students planning to go.

"We still have quite a long way to go," Zaleski said. "It's $3,000 per student and the trip's in April. We're doing a lot of different shows and fundraisers throughout the year, and we're hoping we'll get there."

Zaleski said the cast and crew are very motivated to raise funds for the trip, and all are willing to work for it, even those who aren't going on the trip.

"If people haven't come to see it, I hope they do," Zaleski said. "It's a really funny show; the students are working really hard, and we're proud of them."
