Tree ornament sales to help fight cancer

SEABROOK — A few local women who are cancer survivors or whose loved ones have been stricken with the disease are working this holiday season to help others like them.

Loan Spear, Martha Littlefield-Settles and Annie Haughton are making and selling tree ornaments to raise money for the fight against cancer.

"It's Seabrook ON-TRAAC," Spear said recently. "That stands for Teams Raising Awareness Against Cancer."

The three, along with others in the community, are making special silver, purple or pink Christmas ornaments. The bulbs can even be personalized by having names written on them.

The goal is to sell the ornaments and give the money raised to the American Cancer Society.

"People think research is free, but it's not, " said Littlefield-Settles, a cancer survivor. "Research is expensive, and the fight against cancer has to be fought."

The ornaments will be on sale at Seabrook's tree-lighting ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 28, at 6 p.m., when the tree at Town Hall will be illuminated during the fifth annual Tree Lighting and Sing-along, Spear said. Those attending can purchase the ornaments to hang on their own trees or on the town's tree.

"The purple and pink ornaments are in memory of those who have died of cancer," Littlefield-Settles said. "The silver in honor of those who have survived cancer. We're selling them for a small donation. In this economy, it's whatever people can afford."
