December 22, 2008 03:54 am After last week's devastating ice storm and this weekend's heavy snowfall, Amesbury's office of Emergency Management is looking for volunteers. Volunteers would be responsible for answering phones at the office during emergency conditions, register residents for shelters and assist in helping the disabled to shelters. Amesbury's Emergency Management office is employed when any emergency conditions occur throughout town. The office is responsible for Code Red Emergency Contact System, Seabrook emergency warnings and safety information, and Amesbury weather conditions and forecast. The office is manned by Don Swenson, Emergency Management director; James Babbin, the deputy director; Becky Taylor, the assistant deputy director; and a crew of volunteers. Those interested in volunteering should contact Swenson at 978-388-8155. ¢¢¢ The St. James Vestry donated $3,000 from the annual Village of Church Fairs to three local community agencies: The Pettengill House, Our Neighbors' Table and Community Action. ¢¢¢ All veterans returning home are encouraged to contact the veterans' service agent to process their Welcome Home Bonus and sign up for VA Healthcare. Active duty personnel or their family members are encouraged to register with Amesbury Veterans' Services to receive information related to benefits such as: VA Healthcare, VA Compensation, and other veteran-related services in the state.
