As I See It: From the mouths of Democrats

By Richard A. Astukewicz

Democrats are not always wrong, and Republicans are not always right. But I place a lot of importance on the statements they make, and Democrats and liberals disturb me.

"When President Bush steps down from office the world will breathe easier." (Sen. Obama, May 18, 2007)

"If you don't study well, you wind up in Iraq."... (Sen. Kerry), and then he went on to say, "We allowed Osama bin Laden to escape from Bora Bora." Senator, President Bill Clinton had eight times, a chance to destroy bin Laden — he did nothing.

That veteran, Congressman John Murtha, another of your leaders — "Americans should not join the military"... "We should pull our troops out of Iraq now" ... and the best one, "The United States is the No. 1 threat to world peace. We are more dangerous to the world than Iran or North Korea, and our marines are cold blooded killers." John is making decisions affecting you. His best words, "Marines killed innocent civilians in cold blood."

With these words our great leader Sen. Kennedy went on to award John Murtha the J.F.K. Profiles in Courage Award.

Sen. Carl Levin and Sen. Harry Reid, "The war in Iraq is not winnable"... senators, why did you vote to go to war?

"President Bush is the worst president in our nation's history." (John Edwards)

"The United States is like communist Russia and the Pol Pot regime in Cambodia." Words of Sen. Dick Durbin, another of your leaders.

Fifteen years ago, Sen. Harry Reid called illegal immigrants freeloaders and scam artists. Today he wants to give them voting rights, access to Social Security benefits and, with the Dream Act, he will give them in-state tuition, which our "citizens" cannot get.

Recently Congressman Stephen Lynch questioned why 260,000 veterans were turned away from V.A. hospitals. Mr. Lynch, you closed hospitals and failed to pass legislation and appropriate money ... that's your job.

Sen. Dodd proudly announced millions of your tax dollars to a Connecticut company to research cars that run on water. Is he serious? Senator, we have oil in our own country.

Then we have these other great moments of Democratic, liberal politics. First, the best line, "If I knew then what I know now, I would not have voted for the war." Senators, it was your duty to know, and you failed.

Democratic liberals have passed a bill to give illegals lawyers to defend them, then there is the Dream Act, a 50 cent carbon tax on gas, a war tax, a 61 cent tax on cigarettes and the best one, a $3 tax on gasoline to wean us off driving. That is almost as good as the windfall profits tax on oil companies... Will that really give us affordable energy?

There is more. While you pay for gas at the pumps, six of our Gulf state senators have stopped drilling for oil off their coastlines. Meanwhile, China is drilling for oil off the coast of Cuba, 90 miles from Florida.

Democrats, all, have said that they would not ever present positive plans for Iraq because then they would own the war. They preferred to have the war hang around the necks of Bush and Republicans.

There is so much more, but space is limited. This is what we get from liberal Democrats, your leaders, and don't tell me these are just words. Words are powerful, and they come from the mind and the heart, from the innermost feelings of those who write or say them.

And from the most liberal voice of the Democrats on Tuesday, April 22, 2008, "Today we will, with your help change America and change the world." Change the world ... is he the messiah we are waiting for (Obama)? Somebody help us, please.

Richard A. Astukewicz is from Salisbury.
