A great turnout for Lake Gardner race

To the editor:

On Saturday, June 27 the Lake Gardner Classic Canoe and Kayak race sponsored by the Lake Gardner Improvement Association was held. With the help of a solid planning team, first-rate volunteers, great participants and spectators, cooperation from the weather and the generous support from some local merchants and town officials, the race was a great success!

On behalf of the association I'd like to thank Whittier Press for our posters and fliers. Our appreciation also goes to all the local merchants who allowed us to post on their bulletin boards. Andyman's Bakery gave us great cookies as treats and Stop and Shop provided oranges and bottled water to rehydrate the athletes. Our local musician, Kevin Wall, added to the festive atmosphere with his delightful music.

Special thanks as well to the Amesbury and Merrimac Fire Departments who provided safety boats and on-site rescue availability and to beach and lifeguard officials who make sure we had plenty of safe and obstacle-free room to start.

Our intention was to create an event that encourages people in a fun way to discover, enjoy, explore and care about Lake Gardner. At the same time this is a race that was designed to be highly inclusive, suitable for any age from young to old and for any level of expertise from casual paddlers to competitive racer. Thanks to all those mentioned above, we were successful by any measure.
