Thanks to all who donated to Sappers' barbecue

To the Editor

On Monday, The Daily News had a front page article about the Massachusetts National Guard 182nd Sapper Company's return and the barbecue at the Elks Club on Sunday written by Dan Atkinson.

Dan was surrounded by a number of people that day who wanted to share their excitement and enthusiasm of the return of the 182nd. Dan inadvertently omitted some important facts that made the barbecue a resounding success. Fowles Market, owned by Andy MacDonald, donated their famous homemade sausages, which were plentiful and delicious. If anyone went home hungry that day it was his or her own fault.

Also, The Newburyport Fire Department donated $1,120 so that the troops who came home intact would have an enjoyable time at their barbecue. And lastly, the Shriners had three clowns who helped make a fun day for the children of these brave soldiers and their families. The outpouring of love shown to our 182nd was tremendous. They appreciated the love and warmth they received and will continue to receive now that they are back home in the Good Old USA.

The Rev. Aram T. Marashlian

Chaplain Emeritus, Newburyport Fire Department
