To the editor:
While the majority of West Newbury voters decided against funding for a parking area in this budget year, the publicity this effort generated has made more townspeople aware of Riverbend: what it is (68 acres of public conservation land), where it is (the wooded hillside behind Page School) and its potential for a wider range of users, especially less able walkers, both young and old, and those seeking expanded access to the Merrimack River for canoes and kayaks. More people will use it. More will become aware that parking is needed. More will support funding next time voters are asked.
In the meantime, plans will go ahead to improve access with new signage for the trails — funded and erected by volunteers. Some of the Riverbend maintenance is done by our hardworking Department of Public Works, and volunteers do help to keep the trails open. However, significant improvement of the trails is dependent on private rather than public resources.
Essex County Trail Association (ECTA) has set aside $5,600 (including $1,100 from the West Newbury Riding and Driving Club) to make improvements to the River Road trail along the riverbank. But $9,000 is what was estimated to upgrade those parts in most need of repair. If this is something you would like to see completed, please demonstrate your support by becoming a member of ECTA for $25, and/or help make up the difference by making a donation for this purpose at ectaonline.org.
