To the editor:
I would like to take this opportunity to express my family's appreciation to everyone who has been involved in supporting the Junior Clippers Special Olympics program here in Newburyport. As coaches and team coordinators, Marty Leahy, Catherine Batchelder, Kim Spinney, Neal Spinney and Mary Gene Clavin have volunteered their time to create an experience for my son and his teammates that boosts their self-esteem, improves their motor skills and provides an opportunity for new friendships.
Along with these great individuals, the athletes are also supported by an incredible group of "buddies" comprised of local middle and high school students. Their dedication and willingness to help the athletes is amazing. I would especially like to thank Samantha Leahy for always being there for my son and also her grandmother who with her knitting group made beautiful, individual scarves for all of the athletes.
On Sunday, Nov. 8, Special Olympics of Massachusetts held this year's soccer tournament at The Governors Academy in Newbury. My husband, mom and I were so impressed with the organization of activities, the number of student volunteers from the The Governors Academy and the attendance and support from Newburyport's Special Education director, Karen Brann, and the Bresnahan Elementary School's Physical Education teacher, Cathy Hill. The day and weather could not have been more perfect!
We look forward to many more years with Special Olympics and truly appreciate the dedication of all the individuals who work so hard and make such a difference to our children.
