It will be a very great day in America when criticism of a black president can be accepted as just that, criticism, not racism, and I hope you look upon this essay as just that.
Obama ran his candidacy on the premise that America had a failed system and that we needed change; but in this humble person's belief, I see this presidency promoting the most radical, left-wing government in our history as it attaches individualism, the heart of our democracy at every level.

To the editor:
Nancy Pelosi has strong-armed her health care control bill through the U.S. House. She accomplished this feat by a margin of 3 votes, 220-215 (218 needed for passage). A lone Republican, Rep. Cao of New Orleans, who doesn't seem to understand the concepts of limited government or individual liberty, voted for passage. Considering the narrowness of the vote, President Obama's intervention proved decisive. He rallied wavering Democrats by referring to opponents of nationalized health care as "teabag, anti-government extremists." So much for the promise of a unifying, post-partisan presidency, but I digress.

To the editor:
I don't understand how the government can lie to all of us. Remember when the government gave us that $250? Well, they did not tell us that that was for the next two years. The cost of living goes up, but we do not get an increase in our Social Security. But our Medicare is going up from $98 a mouth to $104 a month. Legislators don't have to worry because they are well taken care of. But for the rest of us we have a hard time making ends meet, like food, rent, etc. As long as we do what they want us to do that is OK.

To the editor:
Newburyport has come a long way in a generation. The '70s saw a dilapidated downtown rejuvenated. The end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st centuries saw unprecedented residential growth and restoration. We are on the verge of another development of the commercial and seaport sections of the city. The community is at an inflection point where we can make decisions that will lead Newburyport to new heights or to division and stagnation. Let's not let the popularity of an idea or the momentary impulses of the times be the impetus for change. Let it be the cause for the community to review, reflect and unite.

I am writing to let the community know that those of us active in the effort to save the White Hen Pantry on Pond Street have organized another open meeting. This second meeting will take place on Monday, Nov. 23, beginning at 7 p.m. in the Community Room of the public library. Invitations to attend have been extended to Mr. Karp, the Lagasses and the CVS Corporation, and as of now, a representative from Mr. Karp's office has pledged to be there. We had planned a visit back in 1972, but our cross-country hitchhiking trip was cut short. Outside Salt Lake City, a man desperate to return to his sick wife had asked if we would swap driving with him back to Pennsylvania, and so it was that we never made it to Yellowstone.

Two weeks ago, the History Department of the Newburyport Middle School asked me to talk about how it was to grow up during the Second World War in Germany.
While I was looking around while waiting for the light to turn at High and State streets, it came to mind that a lot of local history was made here over the years.
This busy intersection was considered the "Gateway to Newburyport" when all north- and south-bound Route One traffic passed through before the bypass was built in 1935. The city's first four-way traffic signals were put in service here in August of 1931. Three houses have been moved from the intersection. Two mayors lived in one of these houses, only at different locations. Today the corner is the location of the largest display of political signs every fall.
