Clippers set records at Tri-meet

Boys track

Newburyport 47, North Andover 39

The Clippers (3-0) edged North Andover (1-1), on a school-record mile relay (Tyler Stotz, Thayer Adsit, Kyle LeBlanc and Tom Svirsky) of 3:48.4 to sweep the Tri-meet. LeBlanc (50 meter dash — 6.50; tied school record), Adsit (600 meter — 1:47), and Greg Englehart (1000 meter) came in first, while Elias Earls (high jump), Steve Bajko (high hurdles), Mark Bajko (300 meter), Svirsky (1 mile), Sean Hickman (1 mile), and Brian Morse (2 mile) came in second, and John Stansel (600 meter), Ian Wood (1000 meter) and Sean Carey (shotput) finished third.

"It was a meet that everyone wanted and both teams performed great," said Clipper coach Tim Foley. "We can't say enough about how well our athletes raced, jumped and threw."

Newburyport 71, Lynnfield 15

The Clippers completed the sweep with a dominant win over Lynnfield (0-4-1). Mark Bajko (high hurdles), Kyle LeBlanc (50 meter), Tyler Stotz (high jump), Brian Morse (2 mile), Tom Svirsky (300 meter), Thayer Adsit (600 meter), Greg Englehart (1000 meter) and Sean Hickman (1 mile) finished first.

Girls track

Triton 48, Hamilton-Wenham 38

Triton (3-1) was behind before going into the last three meets of the day (high jump, shotput and relay), and came out with a big victory over Hamilton-Wenham (1-3). Deanna Latham (dash and high jump), Erin Loughlin (2 mile), Tori Clay (300 meter) and Ashley Pinette (shotput) all placed first for the Vikings. Latham (dash — 7.4), Meredith McWeeney (dash — 7.8), and Erin Loughlin (2 mile — 12:34) and Colleen Loughlin (1 mile — 5:42) all ran personal bests.

Triton 46, North Reading 40

Again behind with three events to go, the Vikings pulled all the stops and walked away with another close victory over North Reading (2-3). Deanna Latham (dash and high jump), Erin Loughlin (2 mile), Mac Scanlon (1,000 meter), Colleen Loughlin (mile) and Ashley Pinette (shotput) all posted first place finishes for the Vikings.

Newburyport 63, Lynnfield 23

The Clippers (1-3) won their first match of the early season during a tough tri-meet, overwhelming Lynnfield (1-6). Sarah Tancreti (high hurdles), Jean Marie Chaney (50 meter), Kim Martins (2 mile), Taylor Burl (300 meter), Hannah McCormick (600 meter), Melissa Derrico (shotput), Avery Cullinan (1000 meter) and Caroline Barnaby (high jump) all posted first place finishes. Chaney, McCormick, Barnaby and Burl placed first in the relay.

"The girls gave their all and we're starting to see progress in all areas," said coach Tim Foley.

North Andover 49, Newburyport 37

The Cippers were unable to sweep the tri-meet, folding to North Andover (4-0). Caroline Barnaby (high jump), Sarah Tancreti (high hurdles), Jean Marie Chaney (50 meter) and Hannah McCormick (600 meter) all placed first.

Wrestling

Triton 48, Tewksbury 21

The Vikings (9-0) continue to roll along as they overwhelmed Tewksbury. L.J. Duford (285), Shane McDonnell (103), Dan Chandler (119), Joe Chandler (130), Mike Doherty (135), Cody Miller (145), Nick Cross (152), Tim Hudon (160) and Adam Ouellet (215) all recorded wins.

"Cody Miller revenged a loss last year to Dan Morneault by pinning him in 1:33," said Triton coach Shawn McElligott. "Captain Nick Cross also won a big match, fighting hard at 152."

Triton 46, Greater Lowell 29

Shane McDonnell (103), Joe Chandler (130), Mike Doherty (140), Colton Blanchette (125), Cody Miller (145), Tim Hudon (160), Brendan O'Neil (189) and Adam Ouellet (215) all came away with hard-fought wins.

"Today was probably the best we have wrestled as a team in years. I was very pleased with the team's effort. Both Tewksbury and Greater Lowell are quality programs, so both wins were big," said coach Shawn McElligott. "In the Greater Lowell matchup, I thought the big keys were Mike Doherty and Cody Miller moving up a weight class and getting wins."

Girls Basketball

Triton 49, Lynnfield 37

The Vikings (2-4) shot themselves back into the win column with an impressive display over Lynnfield (2-4). Brittany Caprio scored 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds, and Jen Rock scored 11 points while snaring seven boards.

"The kids played well and they played hard all game," said Triton coach Karen Christian. "Paige Stokes played very well with seven boards."

Pentucket 56, North Reading 27

The Sachems bounced back from a tough loss to Swampscott with a commanding win over North Reading Friday night, doubling them up. Ashley Viselli scored 20 points and Erin McNamara added 12 in the victory. Pentucket is now 6-1.

Boys Basketball

Lynnfield 56, Triton 41

Down 33-23 at the half, the Vikings could not manage a comeback and lost to Lynnfield last Friday night, remaining winless on the year (0-6). Mike Foley scored 10 points, Sam Ferrara had eight and Tom Bashaw scored seven for the Vikings, who are still looking for that shooter's touch.

"We played some nice defense throughout the game," said Vikings coach Ryan Souliotis. "But we just couldn't execute well enough in the fourth quarter."
