May 06, 2008 12:02 am NEWBURYPORT — More than 200 local runners attempted to ring in spring Sunday afternoon by participating in the third annual Spring Fever 5K and Family Fun Run. The race had a youth theme as 27 runners under the age of 15 finished and, in the process, helped benefit Newburyport elementary schools. No runner under the age of 15 ran faster than 10-year-old Justin Jewett, who came in 23rd with the time of 23:29, running a 6:54 pace. Two familiar faces in the River Rival Region — Chris Kealey and Betsy Suda — captured the male and female titles, respectively. "It was a fun time," said Suda. "It was really well organized and everyone involved did a really nice job. "The weather wasn't very nice. It was actually pretty miserable," added Suda. "It was drizzling, a little windy, and the sun never really made an appearance. But it could have been worse. "Overall, despite the weather, it was a nice time, and I'm looking forward to running it again next year." Kealey found the weather a little less cumbersome than Suda, but acknowledged the race was indeed a nice way to ring in spring. "It's definitely the most family-friendly race we have in Newburyport," said Kealey. "It's a certified course, which means it's a legitimate 5K race, and it really is a great course for young and old. "I ran as well as I thought I could," said Kealey. "But in all honesty I ran for my kids to help raise money for Newburyport schools. It really was a nice event."
