Freshman Sokol nets 50th goal for Newburyport

Boys Lacrosse

Newburyport 13, North Reading 4

Newburyport freshman Andrew Sokol eclipsed the 50-goal barrier with a five-goal effort. Corey Ruane added two goals and four assists for the Clippers (6-10). Sam Melanson had two goals and an assist. Ethan Machurat and Joe Ciavacco added a goal each. Steven Bjako had an assist. Dean Cataldo made 18 saves.

"It was a difficult season," Newburyport coach Ed Gaudiano said. "But they always played hard, and it was nice to end it on a good note."

Ipswich 8, Pentucket 2

Dillon Chase and Tom Clark scored goals for Pentucket (4-10). Ben Stasiuk had an assist.

Dracut 12, Georgetown 10

Softball

Amesbury 7, Newburyport 2

Lindsey Tomasz pitched her first complete game and scored two runs for Newburyport (4-12). The Indians (14-5) tallied eight hits to Newburyport's four.

"This is the first game where we really played with vigor and emotion," Newburyport coach Peter Murray said. "It showed on the field."

Triton 12, Pentucket 6

Marissa Strangie and Katie McCance both went 3 for 4 for Vikings (11-8). Kristina Spencer was 3 for 5. Mikaela Strangie and Kerri Carlton both went 2 for 4. Lauren Sargeant was 2 for 2 with an RBI.

Baseball

Central Catholic 8, Amesbury 2

Steve Serwon hit a two-run home run for Amesbury (5-15). Nick Slevoski was 1 for 3 and pitched a shutout into the sixth inning. Fellow seniors Jay Wheeler, Nick Shields, Chris Cassidy and Mike Corrigan also played their final game with the Indians.

Girls Lacrosse

Manchester Essex 9, Pentucket 8

Sarah Galligan netted four goals for Pentucket (9-8). Zoe McKenzie added two. Caley Yocum tallied a goal and an assist. Sarah Evers added a goal. Kayla Jewett had an assist. Hillary Dandurant made 14 saves.

"The kids never gave up," Pentucket coach Bob Pierce said. "Even when we got down a few goals, we came right back."

Boys Tennis

Newburyport 5, Amesbury 0

Nick Filipancic, Ryan Keane and Matt Mogren won their singles matches. Derek Raschke and Charlie Knowlton won at No. 1 doubles. Tony Dube and Alex Corbett won at No. 2 doubles.

Pentucket 4, Triton 1

Jeff Boyd (6-1, 6-0), Ryan Swanson (6-0, 6-0) and Matt Murphey (6-0, 6-0) won their singles matches in a match that qualified the Sachems for the state tournament. Tim Swartz and Ryan Clancey (6-1, 6-0) won at No. 1 doubles. For Triton, Bobby Dennis and Ryan Pothier (1-6, 7-6, 6-3) won at No. 2 doubles.

Girls Tennis

Pentucket 5, Triton 0

Liza Pope (6-3, 4-6, 6-1), Karena Webber (6-1, 6-1) and Cara Freitas (6-3, 6-1) won their singles matches. Amy Dickenson and Leana Thorn (2-6, 6-3, 6-3), and Cecily Bingham and Sarah Dillon (7-5, 6-4) won in doubles play.

"From top to bottom, this is the best match we've played all season," said Pentucket coach Laurie Dunnet.

Newburyport 4, Amesbury 1

Sasha Radulski completed her Newburyport career with a 60-9 record in singles play. She posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory in singles. Taylor Daamon (6-4, 4-6, 7-6) also won for the Clippers (5-10). Becca and Gabby Quarantiello (7-6, 6-1) and Elly Krusemark and Carolyn Vallejo (7-6, 6-0) won in doubles play. For Amesbury, Veronica Snyder (6-1, 6-2) won her singles match.

Golf

Govs take third in ISL Open

Kyle Doherty shot a 77 for the Govs. Ryan Moores (78), Patrick Cronin (79), Michael Kenny (81) and Thomas Lampert (82) also played. Doherty earned all-league. The Govs received the Sportsmanship Award.
