Amesbury's Waters named top scholar-athlete

Amesbury High alumnus and University of Maine softball standout Ashley Waters was recently named the 2008 America East Softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She earned the America East Player of the Year in May after leading the conference in hits (58), home runs (10) and total bases (101). In her pursuit of a communications degree, fulfilled the requirements for the softball nominee by serving as a starter at second base and maintaining at least a 3.2 GPA. Waters was also an America East All-Academic team selection and earned All-District accolades from ESPN the Magazine and CoSIDA. A member of the America East Commissioner's Honor Roll, Waters, an incoming senior, played for the Stratford Brakettes this summer.

Girls 6-8: Flannery O'Connor, 85 points

Boys 6-8: Zander Willis, 88 points

Girls 9-13: Sarah Peterson, Emylee Wood, 801/2 points

Boys 9-13: Danny O'Connell, 891/2 points

Girls high school: Dana McManus, 79 points

Boys high school: Chris Wood, 79 points

Women's open: Robin Mann, 85 points

Men's open: Alex Whitmore, 68 points
