Amesbury caps perfect summer league with championship

Amesbury 54, Newburyport 34
Amesbury beat Newburyport, 54-34, to clinch the junior high boys championship in the Tri-State Summer League. Down by two points at the half, Amesbury ripped off a 29-7 run in the second half to seal the win.
Leading the balanced scoring attack for Amesbury was Ryan Connelly, Pat Halloran, Mac Short and Curran O'Connor with 10 points apiece. Casey Surgent added nine points for Amesbury. Danny Axten controlled the Amesbury defense in the second half and Matt Baez had a monster game on the boards to secure the win. Newburyport was led by Scott Miller's eight points and Adam Traxler's five. Kevin MacDougal and Dillon Guthro added four points each.
Amesbury ended up a perfect 8-0 for the season.
Triathlon
Several local athletes performed well in Sunday's Lowell YMCA Triathlon in what was an international/Olympic distance — 1.5-kilometer swim, 22-mile bike ride and 10K run.
Newbury's Jeff Trail finished second in the 30-34 age bracket and 16th overall out of 155 athletes with a time of 1:57:51. Newburyport's Derek Coppinger was 57th overall and sixth in the 40-44 group with a time of 2:13:56. Newburyport's Ted Jones finished 76th overall and second in the 60-64 bracket with a time of 2:18:37. Newburyport's Kim Coppinger finished 80th and sixth in the 40-44 women's group in a time of 2:19:17. Newburyport's Allie Jones finished 129th and second in the 55-59 women's group in a time of 2:30:40.
