Vikes get first point at home under the lights
Girls Soccer
Georgetown 1, Triton 1
In a thrilling game under the lights at Triton, the Vikings were finally able to walk away with their first point of the season tying Georgetown, 1-1.
Brittany Caprio put the Vikes on the board first one-timing a volley home off a Sara Roy throw-in. The Royals were able to tie the score up later in the half when Nicole DiMaio scored off a scramble that ensued after a corner kick.
After a back-and-forth second half in which both teams created good opportunities, the game stayed tied.
Pentucket 8, Manchester Essex 1
Breanna Yocum and Stephanie Fitzgerald led the Sachems to victory, each scoring two goals. Erin Troy, Julia Quattrini, Sarah Felig and Katherine Torrisi each added a goal for Pentucket. Felig also had two assists, and Quattrini, Becca Schmidt, K.C. Jones and Sarah Dickinson all had one assist.
Newburyport 8, Rockport 0
The Clippers took turns firing bullet after bullet from 25 yards, 35 yards, and even 45 yards out from goal that still managed to find the back of the net.
Jillian Kinter scored a hat trick and had an assist. Veronica Poirier had two goals and an assist. Avery Cullinan, Laura Muise and Hannah McCormick each also scored. Micaela Hogan had two assists, Shawn Crifo had an assist, Taylor Bresnahan had an assist, Sarah Casey had an assist, and Cullinan had an assist.
Boys Soccer
Triton 4, Georgetown 1
The Vikings put three goals up on the board in the first half, two coming off restarts, and Georgetown never could recover against its river rival.
Collin Smith had two goals — one off a corner and the other a perfectly bended free kick from 25 yards out— Pat Martin scored a goal, and Justin Paquette scored a goal for the Vikes. Evan Schwartz had two assists, and Ben Cross had an assist also for the Vikes. Bryant Yavorski scored the lone Royal goal on a penalty kick after the damage was done.
Coach Brad Smith said he was extremely proud of how his team rebounded after the Masco fiasco to the Vikings best all-around game of the season.
Rockport 1, Newburyport 0
Coach Dave Greenblott said his Clippers did not have one of their better games against Rockport.
Pentucket 0, Manchester Essex 0
Once again, the Sachems suffered a scoring drought, seemingly taking 50 shots on goal without finding the back of the net, while still playing good soccer against Manchester Essex.
Boys Cross Country
Pentucket 19, Georgetown 40; Newburyport 15, Georgetown 50; Newburyport 15, Pentucket 48
Jason Cox (18:52), Cam Doe (19:51) and Hunter Sawyer (19:56) all ran well for the Sachems yesterday, while Royals' Luke Seaberg (19:32), Danny Shores (20:39), Calvin Gonzalez (21:01) and Jon Allen (21:09) did their best for Georgetown (1-5). The Newburyport team cruised to a pair of wins with the trio of Sean Hickman, Greg Englehart and Brian Morse (18:31), and the pair of Ryan Clark and Ian Wood (18:35) tying.
"We had a good run today, and it was nice to see all five guys running so well," said coach Don Hennigar. "Hopefully, it will bode well for the future."
North Reading 27, Amesbury 30; Ipswich 17, Amesbury 44; Masconomet 15, Amesbury 48
Jeff Larnard (17:03) and James Parady (17:27) both ran well for the Indians, who dropped to 2-6.
Triton 28, Manchester-Essex 28 (Triton wins tie-breaker); North Andover 16, Triton 45
Brian Cosgrove (16:41), Zach Peabody (17:12), and Ben Mantarian (17:38) all ran well for the Vikings (4-2) yesterday.
"An incredible race to watch. Five runners (4 from North Andover and 1 from Manchester-Essex) broke the course record, and Brian Cosgrove (who held the course record) was only six seconds off," said coach Joe Colbert. "The Triton boys ran some great times and made some significant improvements."
Girls Cross Country
Pentucket 25, Newburyport 30; Newburyport 15, Georgetown 50; Pentucket 15, Georgetown 50
The Sachems' Alanna Poretta and April O'Brien each ran 20:29, while Amy Babeu (21:35) and Addie Desrosiers (22:04) also helped Pentucket (6-1) to the sweep. Lauren O'Grady (24:31) and Samantha Nadeau (21:09) were the top two finishers for Georgetown (0-5), and Newburyport's Lindsay Cullen (20:46), Kim Martins (21:08) and Maura Welch (21:49) paced the Clippers (4-2).
"The team ran one of their best races so far this year," coach Darrel Cox said. "The intense workouts this week certainly foreshadowed how well we did."
North Reading 21, Amesbury 39; Ipswich 26, Amesbury 30; Masconomet 15, Amesbury 50
Deryn Zahoruiko (21:34) and Meagan Gallagher (21:40) each ran well for the Indians who dropped to 2-6.
"Despite the losses, both teams ran very well. Nearly everyone who ran posted personal best times," said coach Mike Farmer who noted that a Masconomet female runner broke the course record at Woodson's in Amesbury. "The boys and girls improved drastically. The competition was just very high."
Triton 15, Manchester-Essex 50; North Andover 24, Triton 35
Colleen Loughlin (18:49), Erin Loughlin (19:11), and Sara Auwerda (19:59) all did their best in splitting matches for Triton (4-2) yesterday.
"Colleen, Erin and Sara were outstanding and really kept us in the meet," coach Joe Colbert said. "I was proud of the heart and determination our kids showed."
Field Hockey
Georgetown 1, Pentucket 0
The Royals (3-5) managed to score the game-winner with seven seconds left thanks a Kelly Burke goal from an Emily Messelaar assist. Karen O'Hare had five saves for the Royals while Kelleigh O'Hearn had fives saves for the Sachems (3-4-1).
"It was an outstanding game for us," coach Nicole Turcotte said. "We were looking forward to this game, and we certainly deserved this hard-fought win. Everyone played well together, and Kate Grosslein and Melanie Prior both played outstanding on defense."
Triton 1, Ipswich 1
The Vikings (1-3-4) tied against Ipswich yesterday in a very competitive Cape Ann League match-up. Each team had eight corner shots, while Ipswich had one more shot on goal (13) than the Vikings. Sarah Nardone made 13 saves, while Jenna Newcombe scored the lone Triton goal off the Nichole Lebel assist.
"It was very up and down, and both goalies really stepped it up today," coach Donna Andersen said. "It was a great day to play, and though the opportunities were there for both teams, it appeared that it ended the way it was meant to."
Golf
Masconomet 152, Newburyport 147
The Clippers (5-3) lost a narrow decision to the Chieftains (7-3) yesterday. The Clippers were led by Ben Tyler and Jack Ronan with 28 points each, Jeff Wile and Tom Morris each with 25 points, while Ryan Cutter (23 points), Sam Jordan (20 points), Cam Caldwell (19 points), and Ben Gross (18 points) all contributed.

Governor's Academy 6, St. George's 0
The Lady Govs (1-0-1) recorded their first win of the season against a very game opponent, but managed to out-execute the Dragons and ride the shutout from goalie Erin Quinlan. Linley Block had an assist and a goal, while Olivia DiFronzo (2 goals), Becca Block (2 goals), and Kelly Lavallee all added scores.
"The final score does depict the strong play on both sides of the field," coach Roberta McLain said. "The Govs defense was anchored by an variety of players."
