PLAYERs OF THE WEEK
Peter Koopman, Pentucket, senior, fullback/Mike Brennan, Pentucket, senior, tailback
Giving credit to how deep the Pentucket football talent pool is, a pair of senior Sachems, Peter Koopman and Mike Brennan, helped batter non-league foe North Reading on Saturday, 34-3.
Thanks in part to Pentucket's stingy and ill-tempered defensive line, the Sachems worked the chains smoothly in the air as well as on the ground. And no two Sachems benefited more than Koopman and Brennan. On the day, Koopman rushed seven times for 111 yards and two scores — the first on a 33-yard dash and his second on a 65-yard burst — both of which occurred in the first half of play.
Brennan was as precise as a player could possibly be on Saturday. Sachem coach Steve Hayden called his number on two plays, and both produced Pentucket touchdowns. Brennan's first was a 25-yard scamper, and his second, pitched to perfection by Sachem quarterback Mike Doud, was a 49-yard reception (the first of his career) and score.
Another pair of local players whose play should be noted are Amesbury's Jesse Burrell and Nick Croce. In addition to his 68 rushing yards and 94 receiving yards, Burrell had the game-winning touchdown reception in overtime and made a few key plays on the defensive end. Croce was a life-saver for the Indians, as he railed off two valuable extra points and booted home a 42-yard field goal to put the game into overtime.
