Clippers earn No. 11 seed
The Newburyport field hockey team learned its tournament fate yesterday when the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association released its pairings for EMass. Division 2 North. The Clippers (9-7-3) earned the No. 11 seed out of 13 teams in the bracket. They will visit sixth-seeded Saugus (12-3-3) tomorrow afternoon (3:15 p.m.).
"We haven't seen Saugus play yet," Newburyport coach Lauren Hefferan said. "I know we'll have to come out really hard and play one of our best games. That's always the story in the state tournament."
The Clippers made their tournament push in the closing week of the season, going 4-0 against Cape Ann League foes, Triton Georgetown, Ipswich and Amesbury. From October 23-29, the Clippers outscored those four opponents, 10-1. Cassandra Davis was the team's top goal-scorer on the season, tallying 13 goals and six assists.
"I know we've come from a strong league," Hefferan said. "Most of the time, two teams from the CAL end up in the North final. I feel good about the way our kids have been growing together with each game."

Dane Green had a goal and an assist, but with the tie Pentucket was eliminated from state tournament play. Colin MacDonald also had a goal for the Sachems.
Coach Christian Langlois said his three seniors — Taylor Beaton, Paul Mansfield and Kyle Chapman — were steady workers, who played their tails off and was disappointed his team could not get to the state tournament for them. Additionally Langlois said Pat Collins played his best game of the season.
