Rally around fallen leader

BYFIELD and mdash; The Triton football team staged the biggest comeback of its season last night while its best player was receiving medical treatment in the locker room.
After the Vikings learned at halftime that captain Brendan O'Neil, the Cape Ann League's leading rusher, would miss the second half due to a concussion, they returned to the field and scored 14 unanswered points en route to a 14-7 victory at Triton High.

Two more nights of Friday night football

It's hard to believe the last Friday night football game of the season is only a week away. After that, each team will have a bye week prior to its respective Thanksgiving Day matchup.
As we look ahead to Thanksgiving, it appears as if each of the local teams will be playing solely for the sake of pride. Newburyport and Amesbury will likely not have postseason implications for the first time in three years, since Cape Ann League Small front-runner Lynnfield is undefeated (3-0) in the league and has already beaten both Amesbury and Newburyport. The Pioneers' last three opponents are Ipswich, Hamilton-Wenham and North Reading and not; and mdash; teams with a combined record of 3-15.

BYFIELD and mdash; On opposite sides of the Cape Ann League, the Clippers of Newburyport and the Vikings of Triton are poised for an electric game tonight in Byfield.
Behind the arm of surging junior quarterback Ryan O'Connor, who has thrown five touchdowns in the past three games, the Clippers (4-4, 3-1 CAL Small) are an aerial threat.

Seven years later, he can no longer keep pace.
Poretta, a senior at Pentucket Regional High, captured the Cape Ann League Championships title on Saturday, placing first among 81 runners. She completed the 3-mile course in 18:36, beating second-place finisher Alison Lanois of Hamilton-Wenham by 54 seconds.

The combination of Casey Decareau to Nicoline Holland worked wonders for the Royals, as Decareau provided the service to both of Holland's goals. Jamie Block was excellent in net again with seven saves and the shutout, and coach Colleen Gibbs praised sweeper Madeline Duncan for being everywhere on defense, playing physical and having an all-around standout performance.

Doubling up

WEST NEWBURY and mdash; The Pentucket girls soccer program took one step backward to take two forward when coach Greg Scruton took the reins of the team in July 2008. With little time to go through the requisite bonding period between a new coach and his/her players, the Sachems struggled last year, missing the state tournament for the first time in five years and finishing dead last in the Cape Ann Large at 4-11-1.
