Sachems clinch share of CAL title

ANDOVER - The Pentucket girls track team is only one win away from posting its first undefeated season since 2001.

With a 47-39 victory over Hamilton-Wenham last night, the Sachems (9-0) assured themselves at least a tie of the Cape Ann League Large title. Earlier this month, Pentucket snapped defending CAL champ Masconomet's 66-meet winning streak with a 45-41 victory at Andover High.

Last night's victory actually offered more dramatics. For the first time this season, Pentucket's victory came down to the final relay. Bre Yocum, Julia Quattrini, April O'Brien and Alanna Poretta combined to clinch the victory with a victory in the 4x400 relay (4:30.4).

"We won the two biggest meets of the year back-to-back," Pentucket coach Steve Derro said. "I was a little anxious because we hadn't had a dual meet in two weeks. But we came in with 16 personal bests."

Pentucket can clinch a CAL title with a victory over Triton on Saturday (8 a.m., North Andover High).

Yocum also won two individual events last evening, placing first in the high jump (4-11) and 300 (41.5). Caila Aylward (dash, 6.59), Alanna Poretta (600, 1:33.1), April O'Brien (1,000, 2:46.5) and Paige Sutherland (mile, 5:32.5) also won individual events.

O'Brien shattered the school record in the 1,000 by 8.1 seconds.

"It was one of the most exciting races of the year," Derro said. "I expected her to break the record eventually, but not by eight seconds."

The Sachems have already surpassed last season win total (seven) by two.

"We're a very young team," Derro said. "Every week somebody different steps up. It's a tremendous league this year. We're proud to be where we are."
