Indoor Track

The Cape Ann League announced its 2013-14 Indoor Track champions and award winners yesterday, and the local teams were well represented.

On the boys side, Newburyport coach Tim Foley and Amesbury coach Ernie Bissaillon were each honored as CAL Coach of the Year in their respective divisions, as were Newburyport’s Nick Carleo and Amesbury’s Adam Elfiki, who were each honored as CAL Athlete of the Year.

Newburyport was also honored as CAL Champion in the Kinney Division, and boasted Carleo’s league championship in the 1,000-meter run and Tom Graham’s championship in the 600-meter run.

Elfiki took top honors in both the 55-meter hurdles and the long jump for Amesbury, while Pentucket won first place in the 4x800 Relay.

On the girls side, Pentucket was honored as CAL Champion in the Kinney Division, coach Steve Derro was named Coach of the Year and the team won the Kinney Division’s Sportsmanship Award.

Triton’s Kerstin Darsney was honored as the Kinney Division’s Athlete of the Year after winning the CAL League Championship in both the 55-meter hurdles and the high jump

Boys Basketball

Pentucket 35, Triton 34

Pentucket edged out Triton 35-34 to improve to 8-10 on the year and keep their state tournament chances alive. With the loss, Triton falls to 4-14, though head coach David Clay saw reason for optimism.

“It was nice to see them play with intensity and passion,” Clay said. “We’re hoping to finish the year strong and give everything our best.”

Georgetown 68, Amesbury 60

Georgetown beat Amesbury 68-60, led by senior captain Patrick Bjork’s 20-point performance. Seniors Matt Gott and Ben Noelk each added 15 points of their own, and Ben Denoncour scored 10 points.

Girls Basketball

Pentucket 43, Triton 29

Pentucket beat Triton handily last night to improve to 15-4 on the year. Pentucket’s McKenna Kilian was the team’s leading scorer with 14 points, and with the loss, Triton falls to 3-16.
