Morgan Johnston had eight of her 11 points in the third quarter to keep the lead intact for the Clippers. Masco was able to cut to with six points by the end of the third quarter, despite two back-to-back baskets by Mary Pettigrew down the stretch.
Masconomet took its first lead since the first quarter with four minutes to play in the game. The Chieftains finished out the fourth on 20-6 advantage, which earned them the win and the Cape Ann League championship for the first time since 2008.
“Ten points isn’t a big lead against Masco,” added Dollas. “It’s hard to keep Masco down. The lead is never safe with the way they can hit threes. We had a lead, they would clamp down on us. It’s just about finishing mentally and physically. I think the difference was that they hit about 25 free throws.”
Mary Pettigrew and her sister Emily each finished with a team-high 12 points, while Alyssa Leahy chipped in with nine.
