Bound for baseball at Chestnut Hill

BYFIELD — St. John’s Prep sophomore catcher and outfielder Jacob Yish is Chestnut Hill bound. With three seasons remaining in his high school baseball career, Yish has already committed to play for the Eagles of Boston College.

“I’m really excited to go there,” Yish said. “It’s a great school. I like the coaching staff a lot and I can’t wait to be there. Once I toured BC, I knew it was the place I wanted to be.”

Though not having any varsity game experience for the Prep, Yish practiced regularly with them as a freshman. He also was part of advanced summer teams including the Show Baseball Academy, a scouting program led by Steve Lomasney that allows for talented ball players to receive national recognition through showcase tournaments.

“(Jacob) has been working with Steve since eighth grade,” said Don Yish, Jacob’s father. “We worked closely to gauge what level of college baseball would be right for him and sometime around eighth grade we were confident that he was a Division 1 player.”

When it came to picking one school, it was an ongoing process for Yish and his family, but over time he began to narrow his focus to Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) teams, which is one of the most competitive collegiate conferences in baseball.

“We were looking for a good academic school that has the highest level of baseball,” Don Yish said. “Over time, the focus evolved to ACC teams. Besides BC, Jacob also had interest from Notre Dame and Clemson.”

Though Yish made his decision, the line of communication between him and BC will only grow as time progresses. Both his improvement on the baseball field and his grades in the classroom will be monitored.

“We will be in constant contact with the BC coaches regarding Jacob’s development at the plate, his speed and his play in the outfield,” his father said. “BC wants Jacob as an outfielder. We will also be in communication with academic folks there too to make sure that he’s doing whatever he has to do to get into the business school.”
