Saugus 60, Newburyport 54
Newburyport’s season came to a screeching halt Monday night at Saugus, where the Clippers fell 60-54. Needing nine wins to punch its ticket to the state tournament, Newburyport concluded its season with eight, dropping its last three games to finish with an 8-10 record after starting 5-2 beginning to the season.
Newburyport 71, Saugus 43
The Clippers added to their win total against Saugus on Monday night 71-43. Newburyport had already clinched a postseason berth, but improves to 13-7 on the year. Mary and Emily Pettigrew combined for 38 points in the contest. Mary also had nine rebounds, two assists and three steals. Emily had 11 rebounds, one assist, one steal and two blocks on the night. All that remains on their season is one final game, also against Saugus, on Tuesday night.
Georgetown-Ipswich finished in seventh place of 13 teams at the Division 3 North Sectionals on Saturday with 118.5 points.
Constantine Galanis took the title at the 138-pound weight class and was named the Tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler. He avenged a loss to Danvers star Chris Behen, winning 9-7 in the finals, and improved his record to 37-7 on the season.
Derek Chamberlain also performed well and was the runner-up at 195 pounds. Chamberlain went 2-1 on the day and improved his season record to 30-8. Matt Carey finished in third place at 170 pounds and finished 17-7 on the season. Mark Mansfield went 2-2 on the day and placed fourth at 126 pounds.
All three have advanced to the Division 3 State Tournament next Friday and Saturday.
Carsten LaPlante finished 2-2 on the day at fifth place at 113 pounds. Senior Captain Mike Gallanar rebounded from an opening round loss to capture fifth place at 145 pounds and got his 100th career victory in the process while finishing the season with a 30-13 record.
LaPlante and Gallanar are alternatives for the state tournament.
