Ice Hockey

Newburyport 2, Franklin 1

The Newburyport varsity hockey team beat Franklin 2-1 on the road yesterday afternoon, finishing the regular season 12-7-2 while heading into the state tournament on a four-game winning streak.

Newburyport’s first goal was scored by senior captain Travis Wile, assisted by Ben Ventura and Austin Roy, and the second goal came courtesy of sophomore Tyson Gudaitis, assisted by Roy and Matt Kelleher.

“I’m very proud of this team,” said Newburyport coach Paul Yameen.

“We started off 1-4, we battled all season long, and I need to give a lot of credit to my team. They’ve been great leaders and have had a good voice all season. I’m very happy with the way we finished the season.”

Newburyport will learn its tournament fate over the weekend, when the MIAA releases its tournament bracket and schedule.

Two local athletes have been named to the Northeastern Hockey League’s All-Star team.

Jensena Moner of Georgetown and Lily Dow of Triton, both of whom play for Masconomet, were among 18 athletes selected to the team. The others were Brittany Smith and Caroline Hughes of Marblehead; Nicole Woods, Kristen McCarthy and Caitlin McBride of Beverly; Courtney Smith, Sophia Post and Lauren Hennessy of Peabody; Cat Salvetti, Gretchen Howard, Caroline McKinnon and Katie Jeter of Winthrop; Brittani Lanzilli and Marissa Williams of Medford and Adrienne Porrazzo and Kellie Haggerty of Cambridge.

The honorees will all play for the Northeastern Hockey League all-star team, which will face the girls all-stars from the Middlesex League today at Salem State after the conclusion of the NEC boys hockey all-star game.

The girls game is tentatively expected to begin at 4 p.m.
