With the tournament field now set, the Newburyport and Amesbury varsity hockey teams will begin their quest for the state championship this week as they open with their respective first-round games.
Entering the postseason as the No. 9 seed, Newburyport will face off against No. 8 seed Winchester (11-5-5) in the first round of the Division I North tournament. The game will be played at the Stoneham Rink Wednesday at 5 p.m.
Newburyport (12-7-2) enters the postseason riding a four-game winning streak, including last Monday’s shootout win over Triton and Thursday’s 4-3 win over Matignon in the Newburyport Bank Tournament’s Bresnahan Division Championship game.
Should Newburyport advance, the Clippers would face either No. 1 St. Mary’s of Lynn (14-4-2) or the winner of tonight’s preliminary between No. 16 Waltham (8-8-5) and No. 17 Westford (7-7-6).
In the Division II North tournament, No. 9 Amesbury (8-8-4) will take on No. 8 Danvers (10-9-1) in Chelmsford on Tuesday at 7:10 p.m. This will be Amesbury’s first state tournament appearance since 2006; and if the Indians win, they would take on No. 1 Beverly (18-1-1) in the quarterfinals on Friday night in Stoneham.
