Dabritz looks to add to a lengthy gymnastics resume in her junior season

Newburyport native and University of Utah junior Georgia Dabritz looks to better her team’s prominence by improving her already reputable gymnastics ability.

There isn’t much that Dabritz hasn’t accomplished. Despite competing in national meets, earning a full scholarship to one of this country’s best gymnastics programs and excelling at nearly every facet of her craft, growth remains her focus.

“I think gymnastics is a sport where you are always motivated,” she said. “I think that as a team we are very good at keeping ourselves motivated.”

For Dabritz, the will to move up is helped by an ability to move on. When things go wrong, the ability to put it in the past is something that keeps her focused on the task at hand while helping to retain her team’s positive outlook.

“I think one of my strengths is that I’m really good at letting go of past mistakes,” she said. “That’s how I can help the team. I may mess up but I can let it go and come back to help the team by performing better next time.”

Along with a short-term memory that keeps the focus on the positive and the task at hand, Dabritz is known best for a unique and rare feature of her routines. Dabritz has chosen not to use hand grips since a very young age, something that is nearly unheard of in United States gymnastics.

“I have never actually used grips on bars, and I was concerned that when I got (to Utah) they’d make me use them,” she said. “When I was younger my hands were too small and didn’t fit in grips so I got used to not wearing them. In the United States it is pretty rare, because everyone here uses grips.”
