Clipper hockey team opens with victory

Newburyport 2, Lynnfield 0

Newburyport junior Ben Ventura had a goal and an assist. Tyler Therrien also scored a goal. Travis Wile and Scott Webster had assists. Newburyport outshot Lynnfield 36-12. Freshman goaltender Robby Federico earned the shutout.

“We had two freshman defensemen out there every other shift,” Newburyport coach Paul Yameen said. “We had a freshman goalie. We were very, very sound defensively, and I’m happy with that.”

Newburyport’s Alec Reduker won the high hurdles (6.1) and high jump (6-0). Other winners included Jared Healey (40-yard dash, 5.06), Nick Carleo (2-mile, 10:36), Tom Graham (600, 1:35), James Nutter (1,000, 3:04), Chris Orlando (mile, 5:07), Andrew Beaupre (shot put, 40-3 1/2) and the 4x400 relay team of Steve Hancock, Nutter, Graham and Healey (4:01).

Sammie Lor won the 300 (49.0) and high jump (4-6) for Newburyport. Lillian Eagan won the shot put (24-2) and 1,000 (3.37). Amanda Kenney (high hurdles, 6.92), Kelly Conway (2-mile, 13:04), Erin Carroll (mile, 6:13) and the 4x400 relay team of Hannah Sheehy, Kenney, Bella Palma and Liza Twomey (4:50) also placed first.

Triton’s Cody Nixon (0:55), Tom Howell (1:46), Charlie Frauenfelder (0:18) and Alec Moffat (0:59) won by fall against Quincy. Luke Boyle (16-1) won by tech fall. Jake Durkin and Mark Boyle won by forfeit.

Against Wellesley, Durkin (1:09), Luke Boyle (1:01) and Mark Boyle (1:09) won by fall. Nixon won by decision (6-4).

In the Belmont meet, Josh Misiano (2:38), Durkin (0:12), Luke Boyle (3:00), Howell (1:06), Mark Boyle (2:43) and Frauenfelder (0:20) won by fall. Nixon won by forfeit.

Salem Blue Devil Classic

Georgetown/Ipswich competed in the Salem Blue Devil Classic, and three wrestlers placed third — Charlie Galanis (145 lbs.) and Mike Gallanar (152 lbs.) finished third. Derek Chamberlain (220 lbs.) won fourth.

Girls Basketball

Newburyport 49, North Reading 40

Emily Pettigrew led the Clippers in their opener with 19 points, seven rebounds, four steals and five blocks. Mary Pettigrew added 10 points, seven rebounds and one assist. Lilly Donovan chipped in five points.

Pentucket 70, Saugus 43

McKenna Kilian (16 points), Kelsi McNamara (15 points) and Caroline Penney (13 points) led the Sachems.

Boys Basketball

Pentucket 42. Saugus 39

Ryan Kuchar had 16 points and eight rebounds for the Sachems.

Hamilton-Wenham 55, Triton 41

Cam Armand led Triton with 16 points and five assists. Corey Parsons added 11 points.
