Triton earns first win

BYFIELD – With strong team rebounding and a stellar offensive performance by junior captain Cam Armand, the Triton Vikings earned their first notch in the win column yesterday with a 53-45 win over Masconomet.

Armand would finish the game with 18 points and 3 rebounds, something his head coach David Clay has grown used to.

“(Armand) just has heart,” Clay said. “He has the strongest work ethic on our team. We put a ton of pressure on him and he comes through for us every game.”

Armand proved instrumental in preserving a lead that was built in the first quarter, but that slowly deteriorated. The Vikings would come out hot, outscoring the Chieftains 15-2 and setting an early tone. The confidence gained by that first quarter was replaced with frustration as the shots that fell early seemed to rim-out in the second quarter. Triton was able to score just five points in the second quarter, and owned just a four-point lead at the half.

Enter Cam Armand. At nearly every opportunity to put much-needed points on the board to secure a tight lead, Armand came through. His success offensively is something he credits to his team who gave him open looks.

“It was all my teammates getting me the ball,” Armand said. “It wasn’t just all about me. They did a good job driving and kicking, and I just hit the open shots and got to the hole.”

Armand’s open looks were due in large part to the large effort from, well, Triton’s large 6-foot-4 center Ellsworth Rogers. Nick Venora was also critical, tallying offensive boards and keeping the possession arrow in his team’s favor.

“That’s been a big strength of Nick and Ellsworth,” Clay said. “We feel we have a good offensive rebounding team. The last couple games we were watching the ball go up instead of attacking the rim. This week at practice we focused a lot on offensive rebounding and attacking the glass.”
