Icing on the cake for Triton wrestlers

BYFIELD — Triton High School wrestling capped off a history-making weekend at the Lowell Holiday Tournament with a speedy, dominating win against Peabody yesterday.

A quick meet lasting no longer than 20 minutes was just what the doctor ordered for an exhausted Vikings team that faced Peabody, the morning after concluding the annual tournament.

“We came out this morning and it was tough because we wrestled seven, eight, nine matches in the past couple days,” senior captain Mark Boyle said.

“The kids who lost early in the tournament also came out today and wrestled hard. We scored 60 points today and I don’t think we have ever scored that many points since I have been here.”

The Vikings would actually end up with 66 points, a very impressive number that you can go years without seeing.

To put it in perspective, no team competing in the Cape Ann League this year has scored over 60 points until today. The most points Triton had scored as a team heading into their meet against Peabody was 41.

Eleven Vikings would win on the day including the weekend’s three stars.

Boyle was one of the three Triton wrestlers to place at the Lowell Holiday Tournament that consisted of hundreds of wrestlers from 74 different teams around New England. Boyle was in the 185-pound weight class with 54 other wrestlers, finishing with a 4-2 record.

“Obviously it was quite the accomplishment to have three kids from Triton place at a tournament with 74 teams competing,” Boyle said.

“Last year I got 5th and I was the only kid to place, so it’s good to see my brother and (Jake Durkin) come in and place with me. I wanted to do better this year, but I lost to a No. 1 seed and a No. 2 seed. Everyone can improve, though, and get better, but this was a good start.”
