Icing on the cake for Triton wrestlers

Mark’s younger brother, Luke, also placed 5th, something he credits to a proper mindset and desire.

“Two years ago, I made it to the same spot, but I never moved on to place,” Luke said. “This year, I was in that spot again and I thought to myself, ‘I can’t let this happen again.’ It is all about mindset and wanting to go out there. You don’t really care about who the kid you’re facing is, you just want to beat him. It’s about having confidence.”

Luke finished the weekend with a 6-2 record in the 145-pound weight class consisting of 64 wrestlers. He finished ahead of 59 of them.

Jake Durkin also placed fifth at the tournament, knocking off a Division 3 champion from New Hampshire in the process.

Durkin wrestled in a 145-pound weight class consisting of 56 competitors.

Following that performance, he rose to the occasion this morning to beat his opponent by fall in just 16 seconds.

“Mark Boyle, Luke Boyle and Jake Durkin are exhausted and they really put forth a great effort today,” said Triton head coach Shawn McElligott.

“I was very pleased to end the 2013 year with a great win.”

For McElligott, the recent success in 2013 is an indication that 2014 may be a year destined for special things.

“For those kids to perform at that high of a level was pretty impressive,” McElligott said.

“How we did at that tournament is likely how we are going to do at states or at New England’s.

“We thought we were going to do well going in, but it was one thing to think about it — they actually went out and performed. We are getting some guys back and doing some great things, so I am very happy.”
