Clancy’s career capper

Those interested in the football career of former Newburyport High quarterback Joe Clancy might wish to attend the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston’s Bob Whelan Awards Banquet Thursday at the Westin Waltham Hotel. Tickets are available for $50 each through the club website or by calling secretary Dick Lawrence at 781-929-3650. Social hours starts at 6 p.m., and dinner follows at 7.

Clancy, who broke several passing records as quarterback of the Merrimack College football team for the past two seasons, will collect the 18th annual Joe Zabilski Award, which recognizes New England’s top players in Divisions 2 and 3. Framingham State running back Melikke Van Alstyne (Salem) was the co-winner in the offensive category, and Stonehill College linebacker Brian Harrington collected the honor in the defensive category.

Big-game alert

The Newburyport and Pentucket girls basketball teams will square off tonight at 6:30 at Pentucket Regional High. Pentucket (3-3) has won the last six meetings between the schools dating back to 2010. However, Newburyport (5-0) enters tonight’s game undefeated. Last year, in the final meeting between the schools in February, Pentucket posted a 60-29 victory at Newburyport on Senior Night. Newburyport coach Greg Dollas has said the legitimacy of his team’s undefeated start will be tested starting with tonight’s game.

Player of the Week

Jake Harlow, Amesbury

The sophomore goaltender of the Amesbury hockey team has the team off to its best start in more than a decade. The Indians (4-0-2 overall, 2-0-1) sit in a two-way tie for first place in the Cape Ann League standings after Saturday’s 6-2 victory over Saugus. Harlow started last week by earning Haverhill Christmas Tournament Palm Division tournament MVP after posting 39 stops against Stoneham in a 2-1 victory. He finished it by making 21 saves against Saugus Saturday night.
