Amesbury hockey team battling illness

Masconomet 3, Amesbury 1

The Indians (4-1-2) dropped their first game of the season Wednesday night. Masconomet (4-2-2) scored two goals in the final five minutes to seal the win.

“We ran out of gas,” Amesbury coach Chris Kuchar said. “We have 10 to 12 sick kids right now. We need to shake this soon. It’s not a good time to be sick with a tough five-game stretch ahead of us.”

Amesbury (5-0) was led by the first-place finishes of Adam Elfiki (55-meter hurdles, high jump), Doug Masi (55-meter dash), Bailey Flanagan (300), James Worthen (600), Jim Stone (100), Brian Chabot (mile), Patrick McCue (2-mile), Max Cullen (shot put) and the mile relay team of Ben Cullen, Keith Merchant, Worthen and Stone.

For Amesbury (2-3), Jennilou Brogan (55-meter dash, Morgan Fahey (2-mile), Emma Richardson (300), Julia Shorter (600), Samantha Stone (1,000), Hailee Gibadlo (mile), Marissa Randall (shot put) and the mile relay team of Lacey Raymond, Stone, Emma Theriault and Julia Shorter placed first.
