Newburyport boys finish 2nd at states

Division 4 Championships

The Newburyport boys track team placed second at the Division 4 Championships yesterday. Nick Carleo won a state title in the mile (4:28). Steve Preston placed second in the discus (146-0). Tom Graham was the runner-up in the 400 (50.01), setting a new school record. The previous record of 51.0 seconds was set by Tom Svirksky in 2009. Joe Santo placed third in the 2-mile (9:48). Preston also finished fourth in the shot put (50-5). Newburyport’s 4x800 relay team of Carleo, Santo, Chris Orlando and Sawyer Updike finished fifth (8:37). Joe Molvar earned a sixth-place finish in the 2-mile (10:01) for the Clippers.

Amesbury placed sixth overall. Evan King won a state title in the javelin (169-7). Perry Mroz was second in the shot put (51-9 3/4). Pat Halloran (400-meter hurdles, 59.18), Curran O’Connor (discus, 142-02) and Adam Elfiki (pole vault, 10-6) finished fourth.

Division 3 Championships

Tom Funk won a state championship in the pole vault (11-0) for the Pentucket boys track team. Joe and Tom Labrecque tied for second in the pole vault (10-6). Ian Mitchell finished second in the 400 meters (50.6).

Girls Track

Division 3 Championships

Ali Attenasio won a state championship in the pole vault (9-6) for the Pentucket girls track team. Paige Wesolowski placed third in the pole vault (8-6). Marissa Porter (mile, 5:18.44) and McKenna Kilian (400, 1:00.64) finished fifth. Rachel Perry (400-meter hurdles, 1:10.08), Ayeshah Malhi (discus, 100-11), Colleen Kilian (pole vault, 7-6) and Attenasio (high hurdles, 16.62) placed sixth.

Division 4 Championships

For Amesbury, Isabel Prussman was second in the long jump (17-9). Emily Martin (triple jump, 33-6 3/4) and Marissa Randall (shot put, 34-6 1/2) placed fourth.

Katie Gorenflo placed second in the pole vault (8-6) for Newburyport. Lily Eagan placed fifth in the 400 hurdles (1:07.2).
