Amesbury's Mroz qualifies for New England Championships

Amesbury senior Perry Mroz broke the school record in the shot put with a throw of 55-1 1/2 at the All-State Championships at Westfield State University. Chris Wyman set the previous record of 53-7 3/4 in 1982. Mroz qualified for the New England Track and Field Championships in New Britain, Conn., this weekend. Marissa Randall broke the Amesbury school record in the shot put with a throw of 35-10 1/2. Evan King (javelin), Patrick Halloran (400-meter hurdles), Isabell Prussman, Emily Martin and Curran O’Connor also competed for Amesbury.

For Newburyport, Steve Preston (shot put, 48-10 3/4), Joe Santo (2-mile, 10:00) and Tom Graham (400, 50.06) competed. Nick Carleo scratched due to an illness.

U14 Baseball

Jake Valcich pitched five shutout innings, striking out eight batters and allowing just two hits. Erik March, Quin Stott and Myles Maloof contributed with hits.

Andover 7, Newburyport 0

Erik March and Brian Hadden pitched a combined six innings striking out five batters. Quin Stott, Jake Valcich, Joel Skaff, Max Leonard and Tommy Furlong all contributed with hits.
